The Ambassador whiffs of old-time movie star glamour. Frank Sinatra, the Ambassador's most famous regular, hoisted enough martinis here to have a suite named in his honor. Grand touches abound in the public spaces, from the marble floors to the heavy woodwork.

In Hitchcock's North by Northwest, Cary Grant gets to hang out at the Ambassador East with Eva Marie Saint before he meets that crop-duster in the Indiana cornfield. Your stay may lack the same allure or danger, but you will still be in swank surroundings that include the famous Pump Room restaurant off the lobby. Rooms vary in style and size, and some can be quite small. Mahogany poster beds add polish to the king-size rooms, the most prevalent type. Free amenities include a 24-hour fitness facility; a business center is also on site. The location is quiet, but near plenty of restaurants; it's about a half mile (800m) to the Magnificent Mile and a mile (1.6km) further on to the Loop.
