A classy joint with a Grade A location, the Tremont is one of several small hotels that occupy mannerly older buildings in the neighborhood near the Water Tower and Magnificent Mile shops. The tasseled-loafer lawyer clientele feels at home among the leather wing-back chairs and forest green walls of the library parlor. In the winter you can linger by the fireplace there, or check email with the free wi-fi anytime (some rooms have paid access, some don't). The decor in the 130 rooms - sort of whimsical European, with pastel yellows and colorful florals - is bright for a staid property. Guests also have access to a small fitness room with cardio equipment and a sauna. If you're staying longer, you might opt for one of the studio, one- and two-bedroom apartments that the Tremont owns next door. For a lively evening, pop into adjoining Ditka's bar and steakhouse, named after the famed football coach of Da Bears.

The 154ft (47m) turreted Water Tower lies a few blocks southeast. This defining city landmark was the sole downtown survivor of the 1871 Great Fire that ignited after Mrs O'Leary's cow kicked over the fateful lantern. The square surrounding the tower hosts several sweet shops and eateries that are good for a snack.
