Families choose the Grant Park Inn for proximity to the Museum Campus, its outdoor pool and discounted parking (24.00). Though not much to look at, outside convention dates (when rates soar), a room at the nine-story hotel can be a good buy.

A clunky exterior and modern-black leather lobby leave you wondering what you'll find upstairs. Rooms are better than you'd expect, outfitted with blond wood furniture and floral-print bedspreads and drapes. The lake view rooms (two per floor) are particularly airy and inviting. While the hotel does offer free wireless internet access, it lacks some of its peers' perks in this price category, such as free breakfast. There is a full-service Italian restaurant on-site. Note too that the location, which is convenient and a blessing by day, can be a burden at night. It's not bad, just dead: having been recently condominium-ized, the bar/restaurant industry hasn't moved in yet.
