Address: 12825 ventura blvd , Studio city 91604, United states
Too authentically 1962 to be called 'retro', this longstanding favorite sits on a six-acre campus in the heart of the San Fernando Valley. Its 190 reasonably proportioned rooms, mostly in a five-story building, encircle palms, pines and a lushly landscaped pool, Jacuzzi and tiki-style bar.Perennially busy if a bit long in the tooth, Sportsmen's Lodge recently came under new management by San Francisco's trendy Joie de Vivre group (which also runs LA's Hotel Angeleno) - little by little it's being renovated with eye-bending fixtures and furnishings. Rooms feature bath products from Bath & Body Works - 'executive' rooms throw in wi-fi for free. Owing to its location near TV and film studios, the lodge has long had its share of entertainment industry guests, but even non-celebs receive a warm welcome. The on-site restaurant is great value for everyday fare, but you're also close to the sushi shops and funky boutiques of Ventura Blvd.

Take the hotel's free shuttle to the Universal CityWalk, where vintage neon signs cast a little Vegas-style glam after dark. On the unashamedly commercial strip, your best bets are indoor sky-diving at I-Fly, microbrews at Karl Strauss, live music at BB King's Blues Club and House of Blues concerts at Gibson Amphitheatre.
The original Sportsmen's Lodge sat next to a trout pond, where stars, including Clark Gable, and their families would come to fish and cook their own dinners.
