Ride the retro wave on a slim budget at this venerable 1950s motel. Rooms, which wrap around a well-kept swimming pool, have modern furnishings, pastel colors, old Hollywood glamor photos and more than a modicum of style. This one's a winner for its great location between the shopping areas of the Beverly Center, the restaurant row of West 3rd St and the Original Farmers' Market and the adjacent Grove shopping mall. Turquoise doors around the tiny pool (not heated, so don't expect to swim in winter) lead into surprisingly large motel rooms, which may be a bit worn, but for a tad more than the price of a hostel room you'll be satisfied with the standard refrigerator, cable TV and fridge, and bathrooms of stone and tile. Corner suites have full kitchens. The motel is pet friendly, which is unusual for lodgings right in the middle of the city. Underground parking offers easy in and out. The attached Swingers diner crawls with hipsters and short-skirted waitresses, all day and well into the wee hours. Wi-fi is 5.95 per day.

Walk down Fairfax Ave to the Original Farmers' Market, where a touristy but tasty array of produce and seafood merchants, bakery-cafés and sandwich shops gather underneath the landmark 1940s clock tower. Try Du-par's Pies, Cajun-style cooking at the Gumbo Pot, ¡Loteria! Mexican grill or Singapore's Banana Leaf.
The door frame outside each room boasts a mezuzah, a small oblong box containing a blessing on parchment, found on the doors of Jewish homes. The hotel was once lodging for students at a Jewish school, and the neighborhood retains a significant Jewish presence.
