Lonely Planet review

After an extreme makeover, this LA fixture has catapulted from shabby to chic, sporting a sassy 'urban cowboy' look that is an amazing alchemy of styles. The dedicated staff is enormously helpful. The central location may be noisy, but you can walk down to the Miracle Mile museums on Wilshire Blvd or up to Melrose Ave for funky shopping.

Denim bedspreads, gingham curtains and rocking chairs team up with original art, shiny plank linoleum floors and high-speed internet to make for a hip-looking take on retro motel style. Choose from 'His' and 'Hers' styles, the former sporting rooster wallpaper and primary colors. The special 'No Tell Room' has a wet bar and mirrors above the bed - ooh la la. All rooms have hypoallergenic pillows and firm mattresses, plus mini-refrigerators, rain showerheads and other hand-picked amenities that kick it up a notch. Suites have kitchenettes. There's a courtyard pool with citrus trees, two dog-friendly rooms, and an impromptu 24-hour concierge. The hotel's restaurant, Tart (get it?), offers fresh takes on classic Americana cooking (order the off-menu cowboy steak for a study in presentation).
