Lonely Planet review

This Spanish Colonial-style gem, built in 1927, brims with old-fashioned character. From the beautiful lobby with its beamed ceiling, grand piano and colorful tile work, what may be Santa Monica's oldest elevator takes you to your spacious period-furnished room or suite. The busy oceanfront Palisades Park is just two blocks away.

This tranquil hideaway on a quiet residential block of Santa Monica is embraced by gardens, fountains and walkways. Surrounded by ornate iron-, stone- and woodwork, you may feel like you've been magically beamed into the pages of an Edwardian novel. The occasional creak of the wooden floors underfoot only adds to the sense of history. You may not find anyone staffing the front desk - and it's best considered for do-it-yourself travelers who like scoring a real deal. Larger units have full kitchens with early 20th-century furnishings; bathrooms are similarly quaint, with pedestal sinks. An elegant home away from home, the Embassy's rooms and suites are available for daily, weekly or monthly stays. Well-behaved children are welcome.
