This hip inn has taken over the shell of a former motel - you know, the kind where rooms, on two levels, are all open to the outside and are set around a pool? Throw in a largely gay clientele and a laid-back, fun vibe and there's Aqua.A front desk that's made of a shiny surfboard sets the mellow, hipster tone. Elsewhere, that old-school vibe barely survives (except in the form of paper thin walls). Instead, what reigns outdoors is a sleek design that includes muted-aqua doors, alfresco lounging areas with fountains, giant palms, teak furnishings, a hot tub and even a bed. The guestrooms feature wood and concrete flooring, firm beds, quirky pieces of furniture (think: a sumptuous chair made of spotted cowhide) and furniture on wheels. Marble and stainless steel is used liberally in the bathrooms. To add functionality, all rooms have kitchenettes. Pets are welcome; and there is free wi-fi in the public areas. And, lastly, what would a young thing like this do without a stylin' little cocktail lounge?

The Bass Museum of Art (tel: 305 673 7530; 2121 Park Ave) is a wonderful surprise: permanent highlights range from 16th-century European religious works to Northern European and Renaissance paintings to impressive old masters such as Peter Paul Rubens. Look for Albrecht Dürer, Toulouse-Lautrec and perhaps the finest Flemish tapestries in an American museum.
