Right off Stuyvesant Sq, on a leafy residential block, this simple but evocative eight-floor hotel combines old New York charm with cheap prices. A great deal if you don't mind sharing the loo.Though Woody Allen shot the frightening elevator scene in his fun film Manhattan Murder Mystery here, the old-fashioned lift carries you to peaceful, if small, rooms - blissfully free of the film's dead bodies. Only four of the 120 rooms have private bath. The rest access the spotless, recently renovated shared toilets and shower - there's four per floor. Some rooms suffer for natural light a bit, and are a little small (though each comes with a wash basin and a small rack to hang jackets). Each taps into the past with mahogany doors, floral wallpaper and floral bedspreads. Plus there's air-con and cable TV.
