The 1904, beaux-arts hotel gets a lots of nods historically - Buddy Holly stayed here while recording - but it's hardly holding up to its past glory. Probably only worth considering if you find a cheap rate online. The gilded lobby - with glass chandeliers and gold cherubs - is a testament to old-world fussiness. Throughout, the hotel is a bit rickety - with nicks on walls, way out-of-date furnishings, glimpses of the elevator shaft when boarding a lift. Rooms - budget-type comfort, overpriced - have that '80s-doing-the-'20s feel, with green carpet, striped wallpaper, TVs tucked in old cabinets (with web TV though) and at least a few remarkably saggy mattresses. Original molded ceilings are a bonus. Construction noise during the day can be a problem on streetside rooms. The location's central though - the (relative) newcomer Empire State Building is two blocks north. There's a small fitness center, and guests get free coffee and doughnuts in the morning.

John Duncan, the architect of Grant's Tomb on the Upper West Side, designed the hotel. (If you must know, Grant is not buried at the Wolcott.)
