It ain't on Union Square (14th St Inn didn't have the same ring to it), but this 47-room cheapie gets its points for friendly staff, clean rooms, private bathrooms and its location - only a block away from the East Village. There's little reason to linger here - other than the free breakfast in the small cafe downstairs - and that's the point. Loosely patterned after boutique inns in Europe, this five-floor inn cuts corners on fancy design - cheesy floral prints and nicks on the walls - to give travellers (including a lot of artist and writer types) an affordable base downtown. Rooms come with a small refrigerator, satellite TV, a small dresser and a hanging rack for coats but lack for much natural light. The tiled private bathrooms are clean but teensy. Normally loud and a little ugly, 14th St has a few bars and trees lining its sidewalks.

Fourteenth Street isn't Manhattan's quaintest strip, but it's sandwiched between lovely Gramercy Park and roaring East Village - just west are scores of subway links too.
