Clean as in clinical, central as in a few blocks from Times Sq, cheap as in two-digit rates (often), the Americana is not the quaint home-away-from-home you may dream of, but it gets you the heart of Manhattan for very little. This 52-room, five-floor hotel has linoleum floors and a glare of fluorescent lights bouncing off the white walls throughout - ie it ain't exactly modern chic, or Victorian comfort. Rooms are generally the same - wash basin in one corner, a walk-in closet in the other, and a wood-frame bed facing a small TV (no cable) atop a dresser. There are four shared bathrooms per floor - everything's kept clean. (Too clean perhaps - there's a noticeable smell of disinfectant in halls and bathrooms.) Management knows their draw - cheap, safe rooms in the center. There's a computer to check your email, but little other reason to linger here.

The location of the Americana is superb. Walk four blocks north to Broadway theaters near Times Sq, or have a lunch in the shade of Bryant Park. About four blocks south are the lines for the Empire State Building.
