Karaoke mikes are in the house, as are loads of Korean and Japanese tourists paying tribute to the vocal chord gods over Koreatown's fun vibe of noodle shops (and karaoke bars). The 122-room Stanford is ready for a renovation, but its traditional, if slightly worn, rooms grant you a nice Midtown spot for relatively cheap. The Stanford has a noodle shop, a cafe, and the upstairs Maxim Lounge, which hosts jazz nights on weekends and karaoke any time else. Rooms are simple and rather bland and predictable - framed prints of Monet's bridge hang on wallpapered walls and the beige carpeting offsets the chintzy bedspreads and matching curtains. There are a couple of armchairs by the window, but not much natural light (or views) in many rooms. The best thing about this slightly stale and cramped hotel is its location: it's right in the heart of the city.

Busy Koreatown offers guaranteed life and a little flare (the lively Kum Gang San restaurant next door features a grand piano perched atop a fake cliff). Most of your time will be spent elsewhere: you can walk five minutes to the Empire State Building (tel: 212 736 3100; 350 Fifth Ave at E 34th St) or Times Square, and easy subway links splinter from here to different downtown destinations.
