Built immediately after the 1906 earthquake, the San Remo is long on charm, though short on amenities. For the price, it's one of the best deals in town - but you have to be OK with sharing a bathroom. There's an easy, old-fashioned charm about the San Remo, with its pretty stained-glass skylights, whitewashed wainscoting and Victorian-style floral-print hallway carpets. The very modest rooms are decorated with mismatched turn-of-the-century furnishings - iron-framed beds, wooden armoires and wicker furniture - and all have green-painted wood floors, which are chilly underfoot (bring slippers). All but one room, the penthouse 'cabin,' share hallway bathrooms with fully tiled shower stalls and claw-foot tubs. Toilets are separate from the baths. Note that the cheapest rooms have no sinks and no windows to the outside; instead they face the corridor - which means no fresh air or sunlight. Beds have only one pillow; request an extra or bring one. The only extras in the room are two bars of sandalwood soap, two boxes of raisins and a back scratcher.

The San Remo sits midway between Fisherman's Wharf and North Beach. If you're feeling like a tourist, join the throngs of out-of-towners at the Wharf and eat chowder from a bread bowl. Otherwise, stroll to North Beach and dig the boho spirit in the numerous sidewalk cafes. For coffee-liquor drinks, head to Tosca (tel: 415 391 1244; 242 Columbus Ave), with its red-vinyl booths and kick-arse jukebox of Italian arias.
