The hot-and-happening Phoenix Hotel is a favorite stopover for rock bands on tour and other Dionysian revelers. Built in 1956, the hotel is actually a revamped, two-story motor lodge, with every room facing a central courtyard with a fabulous pop-art tiled swimming pool at one end.

Mature palm and bamboo trees line the pool deck, and a happening lounge and restaurant spills out into the garden. Rooms have a floor-to-ceiling window next to the door - like in Hawaii - and bamboo furniture. Edgy abstract paintings add texture, but frankly the rooms could use a bit of freshening up: some fixtures look tired. Bathrooms are standard-issue, with tub-shower combos, and a fan that roars when you flick on the fluorescent lighting (suites have fancier baths). The Phoenix used to be a major party hotel, and it was common to check in and find a huge bash, with hundreds of people dancing around the pool. It's still a rock-and-roll kind of place, and parties occasionally take place on summer afternoons, but now the courtyard closes at 22:00. Even rockers need their rest.
