The 26-room Petite Auberge bows to Gallic culture, with French-provincial furnishings and a sunny yellow color scheme. But the inn isn't fussy or pretentious, and depending on when you come, rooms can be a bargain, given their quality and location just below Nob Hill.Petite Auberge feels like a country inn, with French terracotta-tile floors and baskets of lavender decorating the lobby. Rooms are inviting, but lack the extras of their sister hotel, the White Swan Inn, next door. Still, there's a coziness to the place, like your French grandmother's house in Provence. Sinks are scallop-shaped, many rooms have gas fireplaces, TVs are hidden in creaky wooden armoires, and lamps have floral-print shades that repeat the pattern of the wallpaper. Rates include a big buffet breakfast and evening wine and hors d'oeuvres, served fireside in the parlor. Some rooms are dark (especially tiny No 22), and many face an alley where garbage collectors rattle cans in the early morning (light sleepers should bring earplugs). Nonetheless, the Petite Auberge remains one of downtown's most charming mid-budget inns.

For an only-in-San Francisco experience, wander two blocks up Nob Hill to the Mark Hopkins Hotel, ride the elevator 19 floors to the fabulous (if touristy) Top of the Mark, and sip martinis while gazing out at the city skyline. There's cocktail music most nights, with dancing to a jazz orchestra on weekends. Wear nice shoes.
