The Hotel del Sol is a riot of color with a bright yellow exterior, orange-painted walkways and electric-blue doors on every guestroom. It's also one of only a handful of San Francisco hotels with a heated outdoor swimming pool.

A revamped 1950s-vintage motor lodge, the del Sol is built around a central courtyard, lush with bamboo trees and 100ft-tall palm trees that tower over the pool deck. The look is definitely tropical, which is ironic in chilly San Francisco, where beach days are a rarity. The spacious rooms have rattan furniture and oversized chairs shaped like a three-sided box - kids love to crawl on them. None of the strawberry-punch-colored bathrooms have a tub, but the ample shower stalls are built into the wall. Extras include a 'pillow library', where you can select the style that you like best (a major plus for down-pillow snobs). If you're traveling with little ones, consider booking a family suite, which has bunk beds and board games. Kids even get their own sunglasses and beach balls at check in.
