Art freaks: finally a budget hotel for you. Part gallery, part hotel, Hotel des Art showcases rooms with jaw-dropping murals by different up-and-coming street artists. It's like sleeping inside a painting. And you can't beat the rates.

Bed linens have decidedly low thread counts, carpets are stained, and some sinks have separate hot and cold taps (ask when you book), but damn! the art is incredible. Normally you'd book a room for its amenities, but at Hotel des Arts, you choose a room based on its mood and composition. Take for example 'Graffiti Forest' (room No 411); green and black swirls create a dizzying, vaguely trompe l'oeil effect (but the bathroom has peeling beige floor paint). Or the 'Cubic Suite', which looks like a Picasso-esque interpretation of the Jetsons. Every room has halogen spots (to light the art) and comfy, low-slung platform beds with triple sheeting; ebony-black armoires conceal refrigerators and microwaves. Note that 'Specialty rooms' are the art rooms. Standard rooms are less exciting, but clean and great value, with a few smart design touches.
