The first thing you need to know about the Metropolis is that it's in a lousy neighbourhood. But if hookers and sirens don't bother you, you'll get more bang for your buck here than you would even four short blocks up the hill. Just don't book in your grandmother.Geared primarily toward 20- to 40-somethings, the Metropolis has fresh, hip-looking rooms (for this price bracket) with color schemes dictated by the four elements ('water rooms' are blue, 'earth rooms' are brown, etc). The furniture looks like it's from IKEA, but there are cushioned window sills, splashy watercolors on the walls, and good bathroom soaps. Otherwise, rooms are straightforward. The big drawback is noise: the windows have single-pane glass, and street noise on lower floors can be unbearable. Request a quiet room. Tip: turn on the small electric fan to create white noise, and bring earplugs. If that doesn't work, mellow out in the hotel's meditation room or chill in a velvet armchair in the mezzanine-level library. If you're an adventurous traveler, you'll dig the Metropolis; but if you're timid, you'll hate the 'hood.

Off the lobby, Farmer Brown has a sometimes-rockin' bar scene and good soul food. Punjab, a block up Mason St, serves fiery Indian and Pakistani curries at shoestring prices. Or you can swill beer up the hill at Johnny Foley's Irish bar (243 O'Farrell St), which isn't actually very Irish, but gets packed with bacchanalian revelers just the same.
