Of all the modern motels lining busy Lombard St (Hwy 101), near the northern waterfront and the Golden Gate Bridge, the Coventry has some of the best-kept rooms and the highest overall quality-to-value ratio.

If you arrive in San Francisco via the Golden Gate Bridge, you'll immediately notice the scores of motels lining busy six-lane Lombard St, the main thoroughfare toward downtown. Most of them are indistinguishable and have lousy rooms with few, if any, amenities. Not so the Coventry. The spacious rooms have solid-wood end tables, brass lamps, thick carpet and comfy beds (though the pillows are foam and the linen nothing special). Bathrooms have too-bright fluorescent lighting, standard tub-shower combinations and thin bars of soap, but the floors are marble and the extended vanity allows plenty of room for your things, as well as a coffee maker and hairdryer. Double-pane windows and air-conditioning - a rarity in San Francisco - all but eliminate the traffic noise from outside. Alas, service is perfunctory, but rooms more than make up for it.
