San Francisco's first all-green hotel opened in 2006, and uses sustainably grown wood, chemical-free cleaning products and recycled fabrics in its soothingly quiet rooms. Rooms have luxe touches like flat-screen TVs, iPod docks and Egyptian-cotton sheets. And its rooftop terrace is open to the public.Just because the Orchard Garden is certified green, don't presume that by staying here you'll be trading comfort for conscience. Au contraire, the look is fresh, with clean lines and subtle earth tones of stone-beige and spring-green. Beds are sumptuous, with ultra-soft linens, feather-light down duvets and both foam and feather pillows. Baths have big granite vanities with plenty of space, and the low-flow showerheads provide good pressure. If you're here for work, a long expanse of wood serves as the desk, and double-pane glass blocks street noise. Our only (minor) complaint is that, though there's a fresh-air vent, windows don't open so as to conserve energy. No matter, you can always run upstairs to the roof garden to feel SF's famously fresh ocean breezes blow through your hair.

Snap a picture of the nearby Chinatown Gate, then wander to Stockton St - the real Chinatown - and poke your head into fish markets and herb stores. For dinner, wander two blocks to Belden Alley, a pedestrian alley with side-by-side cafes, just like in Paris. Try B44 for paella.
The Orchard Garden is California's first LEED-certified green hotel.
