A smartly designed mix of the old and new, Number Eight is ideal for independent backpackers who care about the style of their lodgings more than the price. This boutique guesthouse is all about form as well as function: no surprise, then, that one of the owners is a designer/architect.

Two colonial shop houses have been completely renovated to create an environment of casual chic. Past the front courtyard, guests enter a wide, cool room with angular couches, soft red and grey tones, and a massive relief map of Southeast Asia. Staff gleam with pride as they guide you past the spacious breakfast and beverage area, up to one of 20 nicely designed rooms - several of them en-suite - with Japanese-style panelling, decent sized beds, artful washbasins and muted lighting. There's air-con as well as ceiling fans, and the blissful feel of the original parquetry underfoot. At the back of the hotel are the solar-heated amenities, as well as two doubles with sliding doors that open on to a palm-fringed courtyard. It's not looking quite so spick and span as when it opened back in 2005, but it remains one of the best in its class.
