The Imperial Mae Ping is one of those behemoth hotels that dominates online booking sites, but unlike its contemporaries it doesn't disappoint. The rooms are surprisingly comfortable, the staff friendly and helpful and it has a central location near the Night Bazaar.Opened in 1988, the Imperial Mae Ping makes an unimpressive institutional impression. But the Imperial runs a smooth operation with a distinctly Thai sense of place. Rooms are well maintained, and the dated furnishings are slowly being replaced by more modern and cheerier decor. The superior rooms have already received a new-millennium update. Floors are segregated into smoking and nonsmoking, and good city and mountain views start at the 5th floor. Plus there are two pools should you prefer tanning (aka wrinkling) yourself in different positions. Local middle-class Thais often frequent the Imperial for various music performances and the hotel sponsors a series of themed dinner parties that epitomise Thai kitsch.
