The one place to stay in Dili that actually garners the high praise of 'nice', the Esplanada has a great location right on the water and an excellent restaurant that makes the most of the views.

Two-story blocks surround a pleasant pool at this modern and vaguely stylish compound on a usually quiet end of the waterfront. You'll want to enjoy the absolutely amazing diving in East Timor and you can make plans galore at the neighbouring Free Flow dive shop, one of Dili's two excellent operators. After lounging about the spacious grounds, head up to the bar-restaurant for a cool drink as the sun sets over the sea. Then fork into the creative output of one of Dili's better eateries.
