Lonely Planet review

It would be impossible to sleep closer to the MacDonnell Ranges unless you threw a pillow on to their steep slopes. The natural appeal of this place is considerably heightened by the black-footed rock wallabies who come down from the hills to feed (or rather, get fed) at dusk each day.The lodge component of this eucalyptus-dotted property provides well-maintained dormitories (each with two double bunks), kitchenette rooms and motel-style 'Lodge' rooms. The kitchenette rooms are dowdier and slightly smaller than the Lodge rooms, but cooking facilities can be useful and these rooms back on to the rock wallaby feeding area. Heavitree Gap also has a plethora of powered sites and several acres of shaded unpowered sites that echo with birdsong early in the morning. There's also a cavernous barn of a pub onsite, and Aboriginal cultural performances involving lots of dancing and didgeridoo playing are held nightly.
