The slate-floored Nthaba Cottage sits in a gorgeous backyard garden dominated by a giant date palm, itself shadowed by a pair of skyscraping cotton palms. Flora lovers and those interested in bird watching, a passion shared by the cottage owners, will feel right at home here.Set behind the main house on a quiet suburban block east of Todd River, this brick cottage is nicely cluttered with some formal furniture and invites relaxation, though self-sufficient types may be disappointed that the only cooking equipment in there is a microwave. There's also a nice guest room in the main house, which comes with its own en suite, but the cottage is definitely the pick of the two. The resident dog and cat are liable to escort you on your explorations of the backyard, which wanders up a small hill.

Hire a bicycle and head north along one of the cycle paths running alongside Todd River to the Telegraph Station Historical Reserve. The reserve, which has a grassy picnic area and free BBQs, surrounds a telegraph station built here in the 1870s and which handled communications for the Alice until 1932.
