A delightful 10m (11yd) pool surrounded by chaises longues, terracotta tiles and potted palms is the centrepiece of this restful, family-friendly place. Popular with adventure groups, its 45 spotless rooms have air-con, hot water, a fridge and well-designed bathrooms (rare in these parts). Excellent value.

Some of the rooms at this professionally run establishment are just 5m (5.5yd) from the pool, where you can loll about sipping a cocktail and ponder the wall doodles, best described as 'Mondrian meets the Tonlé Sap'. All the rooms - those downstairs as well as those on the three upper floors - have pastel walls, indirect lighting, understated wood furniture and trim, TVs and even some artwork, which adds a dash of colour despite being oddly hung, either too low or too high. The family rooms are vast, with three double beds and a shower that's separate from the toilet. A real effort has been made to create a restful, relaxing spot. The Orchidée is equipped with its own generator in case the mains power gives out.
