Currently Herat's largest hotel, the Mowafaq is an trusty standby and conveniently located between the Old City and the New Town. The good-sized rooms are clean but everything feels a bit tired and dusty. The pool hasn't seen water in years. Get a room looking to the minarets if you can.

At the time of writing though the city's first five-star hotel was under construction on the outskirts near Takht-e Safar.
