A blissful boutique retreat, Hanumanalaya is set around a lush garden and pretty swimming pool. Rooms are decorated with Cambodian antiques and handicrafts, but include modern comforts like cable TV, minibar and safe. It is a refreshing dose of originality where many lodgings are from the McHotel cookie-cutter school. The most obvious and - after a solid stint exploring temples - the most welcome of these luxuries is the modestly sized pool, which wraps itself around elephantine fountains, palms and mango trees. You may also like to be pampered in the on-site spa, or if you fancy swimming laps, guests get free use of the nearby Sofitel's pool. All the upstairs rooms are doubles, including a huge family suite, and all share a breezy terrace overlooking the pool. The wooden floors, ceilings and furniture are embellished by subtle touches of silk and traditional decorations. The food, too, is authentic Khmer and reasonably priced. Free wi-fi and internet access available.
