Aman junkies just can't get enough of the Aman chain and will fly to the ends of the earth to experience its trademark unashamed luxury. Occupying what was once the guest villa of Cambodia's retired king, Norodom Sihanouk, Amansara blends a rich history with a decadent level of indulgence.A '60s classic designed by French architect Laurent Mondet, it opened in 1962 as the Villa Princière. Today there are 24 open-plan suites - 12 in the original buildings and 12 more recent additions that come with private pools - plus a vast spa complex and hidden lap pool. The original swimming pool and circular dining room are impressive, and the suites are all smooth timber and terrazzo, window walls and voluminous baths. Rates include airport transfers by '60s-era Mercedes; Angkor temple tours in shiny black remorque-motos; breakfast and one other meal plus most drinks. But is it worth the money? Well, yes and no. If you need privacy, luxury, excellent and discreet service and (um) you can afford it, then yes. Otherwise, there are other hotels in the area offering a similar atmosphere without being so brutal on your wallet.

Not surprisingly, there is quite a bit to do without leaving Amansara. There are regular expert lectures on all things Angkorian, a well-stocked library and - of course - the pool. Amansara also offers a beautiful wooden house overlooking Sra Srang for a romantic meal or a cooking class. For something more earthy, follow in the footsteps of Mick Jagger and try a local meal at Khmer Kitchen.
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have been known to rent out the entire resort for themselves and their extended family.
