The hotel with history on its side, this place has been welcoming guests since 1929, including Charlie Chaplin, Jackie Kennedy and Bill Clinton. Ensconced in these sorts of opulent surroundings, it's easy to imagine what it was like to be a tourist in colonial days.

There are plenty of colonial-style hotels in Siem Reap, but the luxurious Grand Hotel d'Angkor is the real deal. The Raffles group did a superb job on the renovation, which retained much of the original grandeur and introduced a range of new luxuries. The 131 rooms consist of five types, most of which have claw-foot bathtubs and four-post beds. The best are the historic 'personality suites' and the 'landmark rooms', which are the only rooms in the original building. Breakfast and dinner are included, and the pool is the perfect place to break up a day's temple-viewing. The only drawback is the hotel takes itself a bit too seriously and service can be stiff. The hotel is currently undergoing a refit, which will bring more exclusivity and suites than ever.
