This hotel, in a rather quiet side street of El Raval, has pleasant, functional rooms with features including parquet floors, hairdryers and original art depicting Barcelona scenes. All have flat-screen LCD TVs. Good-sized and comfortable beds are among the other benefits of this well-tended hotel which boasts 110 rooms. Some rooms are bigger than others, and those facing the street are light-filled. As is often the case, the singles are nothing to write home about, largely because of size. Comparatively little traffic comes down here and the lack of bars on this street helps keep it fairly quiet, so a front room is a good idea if you can snag one. Make sure you ask the hotel staff to explain the high-tech multiple-jet showers that you'll find in many (but not all) rooms. This is best done before you disrobe! Location is another bonus - it is an easy stroll to La Rambla. When you've had enough of pounding the pavement, you can take time out for a little sunbathe on the roof.

Outside the old city walls was the city's slum area. Although it retains a gritty, edgy feel in some quarters, it's also alive with students, intriguing little bars and even budding Pakistani cricketers who take over the nearby Rambla del Raval some afternoons. It's this mixed crowd that have made Organic, opposite the hotel, one of Barcelona's most popular vegetarian restaurants.
