In a noisy, workaday area, the Columbia is elegant, friendly and conveniently located. Beyond the brick-floored reception, the hotel sports a polished look with wood-beamed ceilings, wrought-iron furniture, and dark wood cabinets. Airy, carpeted rooms come with mod cons including satellite TV and wi-fi, and the occasional crystal chandelier.

It's not just the excellent facilities that win you over here, it's also the little things: the complimentary toiletries in the gleaming bathrooms; the organic breakfasts and ever-smiling staff; the unexpected bottle of champagne on your wedding anniversary. In short, it's the trouble staff take to make your stay as memorable as possible. A good place to muse on all this is the floral roof garden, a wonderful retreat from the hurly burly of the streets below. This is the place to grab a drink and let the worries of the world fade into the warm Roman night. The surrounding area is not the capital's most beautiful, but it's safe, and transport hub Termini is less than 10 minutes' walk away.
