For Rome, this friendly, family-run place, offers great value. An unassuming two-star, it has well-appointed rooms decorated in pastel tones and plush blue fabrics, for which you could easily pay more. The mosaic-tiled bathrooms are small but manage to fit everything, including, in the deluxe doubles, a shower with hydro-massage.

People visiting Rome for the first time are often surprised to find several hotels housed in the same block. Rest assured, this is absolutely normal here. The Gabriella is just such a place, on the 1st floor of a towering palazzo, five minutes' walk northeast of Termini. In many ways it's quite unexceptional - rooms vary in size, but tend to be small; air-conditioning is limited to the summer; and the continental breakfast, good by Roman standards, hardly compares to a British fry-up. That said, it's a bright and cheery place, rooms are clean, quiet (if you don't open the windows) and safe. There's also a pleasant breakfast/bar area, a reading room with sofas and satellite TV, and the staff are amiable and helpful.
