The Riv is another of Robson St's many converted apartment buildings, on a par with the nearby Robsonstrasse and Greenbrier hotels. Rooms are cheaply furnished, but have full kitchens, balconies, decent views, guest laundry and free parking.

In the cut-throat contest between the suite hotels occupying this area, the friendly Riviera wins in at least one category: it's the only one with balconies, some of which look out over the North Shore mountains (but most of them look directly into area apartment buildings). Inside, the property has a bright and breezy lobby leading to a tiny, ultra-slow elevator that operates to its own schedule. The rooms (some of them surprisingy spacious) include full-size fridges and stoves, so you can go crazy shopping for local delicacies at the two nearby supermarkets. The interiors are a bit worn, with dinged furnishings and scuffed carpets that are ripe for a makeover. They also sport florid 1980s patterned sofas and bright-gold lampstands: before you know it, you'll have slipped on a Tears for Fears CD. Free parking.
