An older good-value suite hotel with money-saving kitchenettes, the Tropicana is a simple but well-run option for those who don't require their vacation accommodations to be stuffed with decadent fripperies.

If you're missing that pastel-themed, slightly-worn apartment you lived in when you first left home in 1985, a suite at the Tropicana is the place for you. But once you get beyond the due-for-replacement pink-trimmed wall decor, clashing bottle-green comforters and grubby sofas in some rooms, you'll realise this is one of the best midrange deals in town. Unlike many Vancouver suite hotels, the in-room kitchens here generally include full-size stoves, large refrigerators and more cupboard space than you could ever need. There's also a recently renovated pool and sauna. And if slaving over a hot stove all day seems like the recipe for a bad vacation, the Tropicana's excellent end-of-Robson-St location is studded with great Asian restaurants. This remains a solid good deal option for visitors who don't care about the coolness quotient of their accommodation. Free parking.
