Lonely Planet review

One of Canada's largest HI hostels, this place is all about the locale. You'll likely spend most of your time on or near the beach - although if it's raining, you can hop on a bus and be downtown in 20 minutes.Located in a giant brick-built 1930s edifice a block from the waterfront, this popular HI hostel is aimed at those who like to be active on their vacations. It's close to the wide and wonderful Jericho Beach, where you can rent kayaking, kitesurfing, skimboarding and windsurfing equipment - there are lessons available for the uninitiated. The 252-bed hostel is the least palatial of HI's three Vancouver options, but there's a raft of free or low-cost activities and excursions for guests, a busy Internet kiosk and a TV room. Bucking the trend for smaller dorms, the rooms here are huge (14, 18 and 34 beds), so you'd better bring something to throw at the snorers. Alternatively, plan ahead and try to book one of the private rooms. The hostel is only open from 1 May to 30 September. Bike rental available.
