This older hotel doesn't enjoy the most salubrious location but its cheap and cheerful rooms offer some of the best deals on the edge of downtown. You'll have to pick your way past the city's poorest to get to the front door, though.

If you're feeling adventurous, consider staying on the edge of the city's dodgy Downtown Eastside neighborhood in this well-run, mid-sized hotel. Once inside, you'll find a clean, safe, well-maintained older building with friendly front desk staff and the possibility of a real sleepover bargain. None of the smaller rooms have a view - they overlook a dark alleyway - but they all have private showers, sinks and TVs. The larger rooms have en suite baths, while furniture throughout the hotel is solid and functional, if a little dingy and dated: don't be surprised to find a saggy bed. A free continental breakfast is included in summer and long-term stopover deals are available. The adjoining Pat's Pub has a roster of live local indie bands and is worth checking out if you have a spare evening. Parking is 2.00 per night. Breakfast included (summer only).
