Occupying a prime plot of real estate facing lovely Ipanema beach, the tall slender Sol Ipanema features nicely renovated rooms, with dark-wood furnishings and good lighting. Sol Ipanema, incidentally, is part of the Best Western chain. The rooftop pool is a good place to cool down and take in unobstructed views of the full stretch of Ipanema. There's also a second floor restaurant facing the sea and a tiny lobby bar, nice for sipping caipirinhas after sunning on the beach. Standard rooms are roughly the same size as the deluxe rooms. Deluxe rooms face the ocean, meaning you can hear the waves crashing on the shore as you drift off to sleep - worth the extra cash in our book. Other things you'll find in the rooms: flatscreen TVs, new carpeting and modern bathrooms with glass showers. The facade was still undergoing renovation when we stopped through, but should be complete by the time you read this.

Start and end your day with a visit to the drink stand on the beach, just across the road from the hotel. The drink of choice: agua de coco (coconut water), served ice cold and fresh from the fruit. There's nothing more refreshing on a warm day (except perhaps a dip in the ocean).
