Set on a prime plot of real estate overlooking Copacabana beach, the Miramar Palace Hotel has sizeable, comfortable rooms and decent service making it popular with a mix of Brazilian and foreign guests.Although the unobstructed view of the beach is the best feature of this hotel, the rooms are nothing special. Each has wood floors, bright harlequinesque curtain design (some rooms have simpler shades of blue and green), and big bathrooms. The windows allow ample light, and as elsewhere in Copacabana, only the deluxe rooms have ocean views. Aside from the views, the rooms are much the same. There's no pool, only a small Jacuzzi. Our only reservation with this place is that the price doesn't quite match the quality; but despite this, the Miramar Palace is a safe bet.

One block north of the hotel, you'll find Bar Bip Bip (tels: 2267 9696; Rua Almirante Gonçalves 50), a tiny shack that hosts live music (samba and chorinho) several nights a week. It's a neighbourhood institution and well worth checking out if you want to get a grip on the local music scene.
