Though Torremayor's a top-drawer hotel, you won't find stiff upper lips here. A relaxed and modern place, it offers all the requisite comforts without a drop of ostentation. It's on a tree-lined street just blocks from Providencia's many bars and restaurants.

While there is a lot of emphasis put on its European style (starting with the Italian furniture and Mediterranean cuisine) it is plain old Chilean hospitality that makes it stand out. Staff is jovial and accommodating with requests, which is the major difference between this and bigger hotels down the street. The rooms are insular and attractive, with calm earthy tones, notably soft sheets and springy beds. Ambient music can be piped in if you choose. If at all possible, try for a corner room, offering dreamy views of the snowcapped Andes. For a small splurge, the 6th-floor suites are extra large and light-filled. There's also a full-service business centre and wireless internet.
