Just a few years old, this is the only Ritz Carlton in South America and it is by far Santiago's poshest property. A symbol of Chile's economic rise, it is also a flawless tribute to the good life.

Your first challenge is not developing a crush on your adorable bilingual bellboy. It's not easy, since the hotel cultivates the perception that you've entered Fantasyland. Moving beyond the lobby's tinkling piano and bucolic landscapes, an inventory counts 205 rooms, 365 Chilean wines, 100 varieties of martini and one rooftop swimming pool under vaulted glass. Rooms in earth tones with gold trim strike a balance between elegant and comfortable; the beds are havens of soft Egyptian cotton. In addition, you can count on nearly neurotic details like twice daily housekeeping and thermostat controls reading both Fahrenheit and Celsius. A fitness centre, Mediterranean restaurant and wine bar provide further diversion. You might find yourself wondering: Is it real? As the brochure says: 'First we let the world revolve around you, and then we gently slow it down'.
