Address: Plaza san martin 5 , Madrid 28013, Spain Show on map
This beautiful hotel is set on a picturesque plaza and offers simple luxury in rooms that bear the traces of restrained elegance from bygone years. Although the building has had many manifestations, its first was as the 19th-century US embassy in Madrid. Many of the heritage features survive from this period.Rooms are large and sunny, with thick red carpet and enormous beds. Comfort is also a priority with wonderfully soft mattresses that you'll sink into and never want to leave. Subtle antique furniture - writing desk, chests of drawers and bedside tables - capture the hotel's classic style perfectly. Nothing is overdone and a harmonious old-world style prevails throughout rooms decorated with fresh flowers. The public areas are similarly a study from a time when no attention to detail was overlooked and luxury was a paramount requirement. The sunlit interior patio is the perfect place to relax with a coffee. The only drawback is that the plaza which the hotel overlooks is not the most salubrious in town - drunks can be a problem.

Madrileños dream about the hearty stews of the northern Asturias region, which is why it can be hard to get a table at the fine Casa Parrondo (tel: 91 522 62 34; Trujillos 4), a block from the hotel. The food is heavy on meat and cheese and the decor is dark and intimate, so it's a culinary excursion best enjoyed in winter.
