Hostal San Lorenzo is a terrific deal. The original stone walls and occasional dark-wood beam of this 19th-century building have been left exposed, adding character that is surprisingly hard to find in one of Madrid's oldest barrios.

These hints of another time blend harmoniously with the modern rooms that are comfortable and bright, albeit on the small side. Part of this has to do with the fact that the furnishings - occasional wrought-iron, agreeable colours, well-equipped bathrooms - have been carefully chosen. No pastel bedcovers and bog-standard modern art prints adorn these rooms. The overall effect is that of a haven that you'll be more than happy to return to at the end of the day. Although breakfast is not included in the price, they have one of the most original breakfast menus in the city and the breakfast room is light-filled and pleasant - it turns into a quiet, 24hr bar for the rest of the day.
