If you took a poll asking MadrileƱos where they would most like to live, chances are it would be within a 1km (0.6mi) radius of this hotel - check out the windows of nearby real estate agents if you need any further evidence (prices quadrupled in five years). The appeal? One of Madrid's leafiest and most traditional barrios, almost in the centre but without the tourist crowds. Staying here is a much more authentically Madrid experience. The hotel itself is modern and comfortable with good-sized rooms that have all the mod-cons - in-room movies, Internet and good bathrooms. The shiny wooden floors are a plus, although the colour scheme is rather anonymous. Rooms facing onto the street are the best (the corner rooms have balconies) and, unusually, there are some street-facing singles that are worth snaffling. Service is attentive, although those who man reception (they seem to all be men) can take a while to warm up. For your ramblings around Madrid, you're within a 10min walk of three metro stations.

If you even think of taking your breakfast anywhere but El Brilliante (OK, it's included in the hotel price but you still won't be forgiven) - a Madrid institution for chocolate con churros (donuts served with hot chocolate), you'll have undone all your good work of staying in Madrid's favourite barrio.
