While this place may lack some of the familial charm of other Baixa cheapies, it compensates with snug, bright rooms. Best of all, it's located on a pedestrian street right in the city's 18th-century heart.

As with most places in Baixa and Bairro Alto, narrow streets and heavy foot traffic can add up to quite a bit of noise, so pack earplugs if you're a light sleeper. Decorated in blue and yellow hues, the smallish rooms are basic but clean, comfy and reasonably priced. The miniscule bathrooms are a blast from the '70s with beige-brown tiles. Ask for a room on the higher floors, where most have verandas and are quieter at night. The continental breakfast, served in a large, sunny room, will set you up for exploring Baixa's sights and shops.
