Part of the grand scheme to revolutionise Lisbon's design scene, the Fontana Park has morphed from 1908 ironworks to cutting-edge hotel with smooth contours, monochrome tones and spacey lighting. All hail its Zen-style Japanese restaurant, minimalist chic rooms and bamboo-lined garden where a fountain trickles.

Fontana Park is upping the style ante in Saldanha with its daring, futuristic design - the combined vision of architect Francisco Aires Mateus and award-winning interior designer Nini Andrade Silva. Expect rooms and corridors that play on light and space with illuminated opaque glass, eye-catching pod chairs, flying saucer-shaped lights and sylvan flourishes like funky tree prints. The fluid design threads through to monochrome rooms with wifi and wall-mounted flatscreen TVs. The sleek bathrooms have transparent screens peeking through to the bedroom (forget modesty!). There are two restaurants: virginal white Saldanha-Mar serves Portuguese cuisine with a Med twist and Bonsai dishes up authentic Japanese. With its rustling bamboo and waterfall, the garden is the perfect spot to chill over sundowners.
