The only way to find a bed more central in Vienna than those in the Hotel am Stephansplatz is to bribe the bishops of Stephansdom to allow you to build a nest in the cathedral's belfry. But why would you want to do that when the beds in am Stephansplatz are so attractive?

So this hotel occupies the perfect position in the city, but its interior almost tops its location. Recently given a complete overhaul to drag the original 50s-interior into the 21st century, am Stephansplatz is now a model of eco-friendly design. All building material used, right down to the glue, was subject to environmentally-friendly restrictions, as were many of the hotel's technical aspects (fortunately they had the sense not to build long-drops). Even the breakfast is a compilation of bio-products. Rooms, which face a quiet side-street or noisier Stephansplatz, are filled with modern furniture and warmed with earthy colours (what else?) while the bedding is a treat - thick, snug and skin-friendly. If you can fork out the extra Euro, book yourself into room 702 - this rooftop suite and its incomparable balcony come with views across Stephansplatz to the haloed doors of Stephansdom.
