Lonely Planet review

With over 300 years of experience under its belt, Stefanie is a hotel with plenty of history and character, but also enough modern amenities to satisfy most guests with picky demands. Fortunately Stefanie doesn't play upon its long history but rather sticks to doing what hotels should do: making guests feel comfortable and relaxed.

Staff greet visitors with curtness devoid of any rudeness and lead them through the hotel's labyrinth of corridors, which spread over five floors and around a quiet courtyard, to their rooms. The rooms themselves come in two varieties: some are graced with period furniture and warm colours, while others are far plainer, clad in dark-wood panelling and '70s-retro pieces. The former are naturally grander and roomier than the latter, but both sport fully renovated bathrooms almost as big as small studios. Only a quick stroll across the Donau canal to the Innere Stadt, Stefanie is also a hotel handy to the city's main action spots, but far enough away to enjoy some peace and quiet.
