Wine and comfort play a hugely important role in the Austrian way of life, so it's unusual that Vienna suffered so long without a hotel combining the best of the two. With the revamping of Rathaus, that's all changed.

Completely renovated in the not-too-distant past, Rathaus is the labour of love of the Fleischhaker's, an entrepreneurial restaurant/hotel family who felt the need to honour Austrian wine-makers. The result is a boutique hotel of some standing, which holds a wine collection to make Bacchus envious. Each of its 33 stripped-back rooms is dedicated to a quality Austrian wine-maker, but Rathaus doesn't stop at a couple of photos and a short blurb; instead, the minibar is stocked with premium wines from the growers themselves. The interiors are an elegant mix of dark woods, pale yellows and personal touches (cut flowers, designer vases and the like), creating a functional and appealing set-up. Some rooms are open-plan, so if you want a bathroom with a door, be sure to ask for one. The hotel also offers wine tastings in its designer bar and excursions to Austria's nearby wine-growing regions.
